At any time, during your drive to work, a grocery store, or a family event, you could get a flat tire. Getting a flat can throw a wrench in your plans, but if you’re prepared it would be nothing more than a minor hiccup in your day. Waiting for roadside assistance can be inconvenient and unsafe, so we thought we’d share a simple step-by-step guide that will help you change a flat tire and get you back on the road in no time.

Here are the steps on how to change your tire:

  1. Locate your spare tire and tools – your tools and spare tire should be in your trunk underneath the carpet. The tools needed are a tire iron, car jack, and jack raise/lower attachment.
  2. Loosen wheel bolts – loosen the wheel’s bolts with the tire iron by turning the iron counter-clockwise. Do not remove the bolts completely.
  3. Raise your car – insert the car jack underneath the car point making sure it lines up with groove from jack. Insert jack lever and raise car by turning the level clockwise.
  4. Remove the flat tire – once the car is lifted off the ground, continue to unbolt the nuts the rest of the way and pull off the tire (pull towards yourself).
  5. Put on spare tire – put on the replacement tire and screw the bolts on to hold the tire in place.
  6. Lower the car – lower the car by turning the jack lever counter-clockwise until jack is fully closed and the car is on the ground.
  7. Tigthen the wheels’ bolts – tighten the wheels bolts by turning the iron clockwise. Tighten one bolt at a time by alternating from one to the other in an “X” direction.
